Golden Glades Interchange, Miami Gardens, FL

After having spent a couple of weeks looking at stuff internationally, I thought I pop back to the U.S.

In the past week, over in my blog, I’ve written quite a bit about Florida homeowners insurance issues. So, to go along with the meme….

This is the mighty Golden Glades Interchange a bit outside Miami. It’s the interchange among the south end of the Florida Turnpike mainline, I-95, the Palmetto Expressway (FL 826), FL 9, and US 441, with HOV lanes and a commuter rail line thrown in just to make things fun.

In other words, it’s a big, convoluted mess.

According to the interchange’s Wikipedia Page, original construction on the interchange lasted from 1962 through 1964.

This interchange has also previously been featured on Michael Koerner’s Highway Feature of the Week in 1998.

Ah, the Golden Glades. As a Miami native and roadgeek historian, this little doozy has a somewhat sordid past. Established in 1953 as the junction of State Road 9 (the precursor to I-95), U.S. 441/State Road 7 and State Road 826. It was f***ed up from the get-go. In 1957, the Turnpike was added to the mix, then the Palmetto Expressway in 1961, then I-95 was upgraded and the whole thing came together finally in 1964. A few ramps have been added, a few have been removed, but it is pretty much in its original state. And no, there are no projects to rebuild the damn thing either. The joke in South Florida is that the Golden Glades will remain a joke!
